OUR NEW CONDUCTOR, MARKITA MOORE
Markita Moore, a versatile artist and Detroit native, wears many hats as conductor, teacher, musician, and songwriter. She began her music education early, first playing the trumpet in fifth grade and majoring in it all the way through college at Wayne State University, where she earned her BA in Instrumental Music Education in 2011.
She has been a music teacher for the three years since graduating, first for South Lake Schools and then University Prep Science and Math High School in Detroit, where she currently works not only as teacher but as Choral Director. In addition to conductin the choir at UPSM High Schoo, Markita has also had experience conducting the Faculty Orchestra at the New England Music Camp and is pursuing her MA in conducting as well.
While maintaining her life-long relationship with the trumpet by performing with the dynamic and popular Detroit Party Marching Band, Markita has also learned electric bass, drums, guitar, and piano along her musical journey and leads a four-piece experimental rock band called Elemental Meaning.
She is well-versed as as singer/songwriter, using the acoustic guitar and her sultry voice to conjure up music reminiscent of Tracy Chapman or Ani DiFranco, with a Micahel Hedges influence thrown in for good measure.
Markita is also a member of several music organizations including the Michigan Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Educators, College Band Directors National Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.
